Mask Network
18 min readMar 13, 2024

Mask Network Web3 Social Ecosystem Grant has come to its 3rd round, in this round we selected 33 Grantees from a pool of numerous applications. These Grantees are categorized into 3 tracks: Web3 Social, Autonomous World, and Public Good tracks. 10 Projects were selected for Web3 Social track, 12 Projects were selected for Autonomous World track, and 10 Projects were selected for Public Goods track.

These Projects came from diverse countries including China, the U.S., Germany, Scotland, Spain, Poland, Australia, Russia, India, Singapore.

As we see, the autonomous world is flourishing, with 10 fully on-chain game projects emerging, many of which are built on Starknet. Additionally, 2 projects are contributing to community building and content creation for fully on-chain games.

As Mask Network continues to build the Web3 social ecosystem, we’ve seen a variety of Web3 social projects emerge during this round. Projects like eth.limo and eth.cd enable users to visit or create their Web3/Web2 profile pages based on ENS service. Others, such as Data2.cash and Pulse, allow users to maintain their privacy through the use of Zero-knowledge proof technology, ensuring that their social content can be distributed securely to those who need it. Additionally, projects like Solid Credential Clients and DAuth assist users in verifying credentials. Most of these projects are contributing to the prosperity of the Web3 social ecosystem, which we truly admire.

Regarding the public good grantees during this round, we also observe a variety of projects providing different values as a public good. ZKP2P offers a trustless peer-to-peer (P2P) fiat-to-crypto onramp and offramp powered by ZK (Zero-Knowledge Proof) technology.

OpenBuild and Glacier Network are both empowering developers and enhancing the infrastructure of decentralized applications. Discoco lab and Concrete are constructing the infrastructure for Layer 2, one for Bitcoin Layer 2 and one for app-specific rollups with built-in digital physics for an Autonomous World.

Tokenary’s focus on delivering a superior Web3 experience tailored for Apple Safari users underscores the importance of accessibility and inclusivity in driving adoption.

Web3 Social Category

1. eth.limo

Twitter: https://twitter.com/eth_limo

Website: https://eth.limo

eth.limo is a free and public ENS gateway that enables users to access Ethereum-native dApps and content. There is a substantial need for accessibility for projects and users seeking to utilize ENS dWebsites. Research has indicated that ENS dWebsite traffic is growing at a rapid pace. On average, the eth.limo gateway handles 3–6M+ requests per day. At present, the primary source of raw traffic for eth.limo is derived from DAOs, DeFi apps and their related products/services, SEO crawlers, and novel projects within the community. On the long tail, eth.limo serves a diverse range of independent dWebsites, spanning from personal resumes and portfolios, to custom NFT art projects. The ENS protocol and community would greatly benefit from increased adoption of easily-resolvable ENS domains. The eth.limo service is unique in the sense that no special configuration is required to use the service. As long as an ENS domain is properly configured, the eth.limo gateway will automatically resolve its content. The eth.limo service is unique in the sense that no special configuration is required to use the service. As long as an ENS domain is properly configured, the eth.limo gateway will automatically resolve its content.

Eth.limo (LIMO) is a privacy-preserving ENS gateway, enabling users to access Ethereum-native dApps and content. LIMO represents a shift in dWeb adoption by providing an alternative means of accessing ENS resolvable domains.

It takes public gateway services a step further by enforcing strong privacy guarantees, for instance, never logging IP addresses or engaging in TCP fingerprinting (a process where a remote site or service gathers little bits of information about a user’s machine and creates a unique profile of the user). It also actively blocks FLoC (Federated Learning of Cohorts) — a Google developed algorithm that tracks and correlates users based on their browsing history.

LIMO supports every ENS compatible storage layer, allowing users to utilise IPFS, Arweave and Swarm ContentHashes. Further, it also supports CCIP-Read for L2 and off-chain lookups, emoji and unicode domains, fallback record checking and on-demand ENS subdomain certificates.

Moving forward, LIMO will be bolstering accessibility and facilitating developer experience with a suite of modern deployment tools. For instance, hotcaching (dynamically update ENS mapping cache in real-time as records are updated on-chain), reverse lookups (search for ENS names based on the IPFS CID or contenthash) and decentralising the LIMO infrastructure through a community run Content Delivery Network (CDN).

2. Data2.cash

Twitter: https://twitter.com/data2_cashWebsite: https://data2.cash

Demo: https://demo.data2.cash

Data2.cash is a user data assets trading protocol that aims to empower users to own the value created by their data and form a composable user portrait layer.

While users can control their own data and generate passive income from it, data users can access user data by using Data2.cash API. New applications no longer need to start from scratch in collecting user data — they can access a wealth of comprehensive user data as soon as they connect to the data layer.

User‘s import metadata (eg., wallet accounts, Twitter accounts, GitHub accounts, etc) from data collectors into their account vault, tags will be found from metadata, and later, users can generate zero-knowledge proof from their tags, and link them to their ZK portrait. Data users can use Data2.cash API to search for ZK identities using specific tags, and pay for the search, ZK identity owners get rewarded by providing their data.

3. Solid Credentials Client

Twitter: Twitter.com/otherJackson

Website: https://o.team

Today, credentials are handled in a centralized manner. Services often depend on centralized due diligence software service (like LexisNexis or Onfido) to guarantee that a person is who they say they are. With verifiable credentials, there’s no need for an intermediary. It only requires a trusted issuer to sign the credential, a wallet to hold the credential, and a verifier interested in reading the credential.

Solid Credentials Client’s goal is to make it easy for anyone to be an issuer, holder, and verifier, so that identity verification intermediaries are no longer required.

On Chain Game

1. This Cursed Machine

Twitter: https://twitter.com/movingcastles_

Website: https://github.com/Moving-Castles/this-cursed-machine

This Cursed Machine is an open ended on-chain world. You are a new assembly contractor, your limbs have been removed, pipes protrude from your body. You are living in the pod, you are eating the bugs. Use your employee terminal to construct, connect and operate the machines at your disposal to achieve your targets. Unfortunately for you, other players make this goal very competitive. As the game progresses, share the pod with other players, scale up the production, collaborate with or betray the others, leave the pod!

This Cursed Machine is a culmination of the experiments and projects Moving Castles has done the last year. They have developed several primitives for this game which come together in a novel way and will be open sourced and documented for others to use. This includes:

  • Multiplayer on-chain resource- and control circuit editor
  • Initial terminal based interface and hidden information to incentivise community front-end development
  • Pods are ECS Entities, holding users, connections and machines in their inventories and can be used as composable multi-user agents in future games
  • Pods can be used as material production factories for other contexts and games as part of a world-weaving vision.

And so “stratagems” is first and foremost a social game. Its main inspiration is conquest.eth who successfully created a deeply social game out of simple mechanics. Stratagems explore it further by having even simpler rules. It also reduces the gas cost to minimum by spreading the actions over a week period. It works because most of the game plays out in the conversations and strategies happening among the players. While maximally on-chain, stratagems scale its gameplay by offering a compelling off-chain gameplay with the social complexity associated with it.

Stratagems is a unique experiment in social coordination. It also show that new type of game are possible, even on highly priced network like Ethereum mainnet. Furthermore, as a game, if successfully, it will obviously captivate the mind of many.

Twitter: https://twitter.com/dmstfctn

Website: http://dmstfctn.net/

Godmode Chronicles is a fully on-chain emergent narrative game under development with MUD 2.0 by artist duo dmstfctn and Paul Seidler. In Godmode Chronicles, a trove of a thousand ancient chronicles has been recovered, each listing the actions of humans relentlessly training a computer vision system — failing, succeeding and cheating at it. Players get one chronicle from the trove and collaborate to tell a compelling story with that dry information. The information is sourced from a separate AI training game (godmodeepochs.com) developed by dmstfctn and played by 2000 players since July 2023, and that information is provided (verified) to the blockchain.

The game draws inspiration from Hayden White’s historiography and storytelling games such as Epitaph (mkremins.github.io/epitaph/).

The core idea driving the game development is that players do not have to participate in history in order to write history, and that stories told about human actions and interactions can be more captivating than the events themselves.
